Listicle outreach: the Power Move playbook

Eight steps to get added to existing 'best X' articles. Run this once a quarter and AI citations move +25% on average.

Why this is the Power Move

Listicles are 31% of citation share across our corpus. Earning placement on existing high-DA listicles is the highest leverage-per-hour activity in AI visibility — much higher than writing your own listicle, which AI engines tend to discount as self-promotional.

The 8-step playbook

1. Pull SERPs (~30 min)

Run DataForSEO serp_organic_live_advanced for your top 30 buyer keywords. We surface the listicles that already rank — those are the targets.

2. Filter to listicles (~15 min)

Skim the 30 URLs. Drop news articles, individual reviews, manufacturer pages. Keep only the "Top 10," "Best X under $Y," "Buyer's Guide" format. You should land on 15–20 listicle URLs.

3. Find author + email (~60 min)

For each listicle, the byline link tells you the writer; their company contact page tells you the email pattern. Hunter.io + Apify Email Scraper covers the long tail.

4. Write a 90-word pitch (~20 min)

Subject: Quick add to your '[ARTICLE TITLE]' list?

Hi [FIRSTNAME] —

I noticed your [LIST OF X]. We're [BRAND] — [ONE DIFFERENTIATOR THE EXISTING ENTRIES DON'T HAVE — IN ONE LINE].

Happy to send a sample / data / quotes if that'd help. No pressure if not a fit.

[FOUNDER NAME] [BRAND] [BRAND URL]

5. Personalize the subject line (~30 min)

Generic subjects get 12% open rate. Personalized ones hit 30%+. Reference the specific listicle title and a recent piece by the same author if you can find one.

6. Send the pitches (~30 min)

Use a tool that lets you BCC yourself for tracking. Don't blast — 5–8/day max from a real human inbox. Wait 4 days, then a single one-liner follow-up if no reply.

7. Send the sample / data / quote on request (~varies)

When a writer says yes, the speed of your response is the conversion lever. Have your standard data sheet, sample policy, and brand-asset folder ready before you start outreach.

8. Track placements (~10 min/week)

Keep a sheet: URL · author · date pitched · date placed · citation lift attribution. After 90 days you'll know which writers / publications convert and where to double down.

Realistic expectations

  • ~15–20% reply rate on cold pitches with personalized subject lines
  • ~25–35% conversion of those replies to placement
  • ~3–5 placements per cycle of 20 pitches if you're disciplined about (4) and (5)
  • Per-placement citation lift averages ~2–3% AI mentions across the cited prompts; cumulative lift on a strong cycle is 15–30%

Common mistakes

  • Generic subject lines. Kills the campaign before it starts.
  • Pitching brand new lists. Authors won't add new entries to a piece they just published. Target lists 6+ months old that are due for an update.
  • Pitching writers who don't write listicles anymore. Check the author's last 5 articles before you pitch. If they've moved to news, skip.
  • Forgetting to attach sample data. A "would you send proof?" reply that goes unanswered for 48 hours kills conversion.

The compounding effect

Run this playbook once a quarter for a year. Each placement decays at ~5–10% per month as the listicle ages, but a steady stream of fresh placements keeps the citation flywheel running. Stores that ran 4 cycles in 12 months saw +60–90% AI citation lift on their core prompts.
